After touring an Israeli military checkpoint on the outskirts of the West Bank town of Ramallah and meeting with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat on Monday, Saramago told reporters: "What is happening in Palestine is a crime which we can put on the same plane as what happened at Auschwitz, at Buchenwald. Even taking into account the differences in time and place, it is the same thing."
